Dream road for vintage cars in Salzburg

The Gerlos Alpine Road for vintage car victims and convertible aficionados

Open the sunroof, turn on the motor, “On The Road Again” is playing on the road – time for a pleasure drive with a vintage car on Salzburg’s gentle mountain road, the Gerlos Alpine Road. Not too steep, not too high, not too fast: the leisurely 9% gradient from Krimml up to the pass summit at 1,628 m above sea level are lots of fun with pre-wars and four-wheeled alpine pioneers. Eight elegant, easy-to-drive turns open up different perspectives on the grand surrounding mountains and the Krimml Waterfalls. The season for convertible and pleasure drivers is every year from early May to late October. Find tour suggestions on the Gerlos Alpine Road in the brochure “Touren für Geniesser” by the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrassen AG!

Drives for vintage cars in Salzburg: the short and long enjoyment tour

We present two unhurried tours that are genuine adventures with your vintage car or convertible. The long tour leads you even past the Gerlos Alpine Road, but also up high to the glacial paradise of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. Choose between the short, eventful 173 km or the 410 km multi-day tour across the king of the Eastern Alps, the Grossglockner.

Short Gerlos round drive from Salzburg to Tyrol and back

We start this tour in Mittersill in Salzburg’s Pinzgau. Your journey leads you via Kitzbühel to the Zillertal. When the Zillertal is still far away, take a left up the mountain. The Gerlos Alpine Road starts in the village Gerlos on the Tyrolean side. Now its time to enjoy the stretch of the mountain road with the most views! Once you’ve reached the pass summit Pinzgauer Höhe, the Kitzbüheler Alps in the north and the High Tauern in the south greet you. Now it’s down to Krimml on the Gerlos Alpine Road planned by Franz Wallack, which blends in seamlessly with the landscape. Catch constant glimpses of the Krimml Waterfalls before reaching the valley and going on a coffee break at the waterfall centre. Then return to Mittersill, the starting point of your round tour.

Long Gerlos round drive with Grossglockner High Alpine Road

This time, you will start in the south of Tauern in the Carinthian pilgrimage and mountaineering village of Heiligenblut. The start brings you up high: cross the Alps on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and continue driving via Lofer to Kitzbühel. Drive on via Wörgl to the Zillertal. The second panoramic road highlight for vintage cars in Salzburg is immanent, the Gerlos Alpine Road. Drive via Zell am Ziller to Gerlos and across the pass summit to Salzburg. Now drive down the mountain to Krimml and Mittersill as on the short Gerlos round drive. But that’s not all: time for a second shot at the Grossglockner High Alpine Road! Return to Carinthia after 410 multifaceted kilometres.
