General Terms and Conditions for Gerlos Alpine Road

Effective as of 01.07.2023

1) Payment of the road toll
Vehicle operators who refuse to pay the calculated toll (or the price according to the current toll list) at the toll station will not be allowed passing the toll station. Grossglockner High Alpine Roads PLC (=Großglockner Hochalpenstraßen AG / GROHAG), as owner of Gerlos Alpine Road, rejects any claims for damages from such refusal.

2) Obligations of the vehicle operator
The vehicle operator is obliged to stop at the barrier and pay the road toll. Even customers who already have a valid ticket must stop at the stop line and wait for the barrier to close after the vehicle in front moves onward and wait until the camera recognizes the licence number or the barrier is opened using the ticket. The barrier closes after each vehicle!
Fares are dependent on weight and vehicle type, therefore, the driver is required to show the vehicle registration certificate when requested.
In case of a complaint the vehicle operator must submit this in writing within 60 days. Once the time limit has expired it may no longer be possible to access the necessary data.

3) Use of the Road and Parking Spaces
The Gerlos Alpine Road permits only normal use of the road and designated parking spaces. The rules of the Highway Code (StVO) apply. Any other use is expressly prohibited, in particular any use or activity that results in damage or dirtying of the road and/or defacing the landscape/surface of the asphalt.
Violations will be reported without exception. In addition, drivers will be deemed to have agreed to pay us a lump sum compensation for repair, disposal, cleaning and administrative costs of € 800.00 for each violation. The right to make further claims for damages remains expressly reserved.

4) Online ticket and pre-sale ticket
Pre-sale tickets and online tickets and voucher have an expiry date. The period of validity can be seen on the ticket/voucher.

5) Tickets – licence number link
All tickets issued at the toll stations are linked to the motor vehicle license number, thus allowing ticket holders to pass the toll stations repeatedly within the period of validity.
Long-term tickets and day tickets must always be carried in the vehicle to pass the toll station several times.

6) Payment method
Payments in cash must be made in Euros. The toll can also be paid by means of the debit and credit cards listed below:
• MasterCard
• Visa
• Routex
• Austrian debit cards
The payment methods listed above serve as information only. Despite its mention in the list, a payment method may be rejected due to a regulation of the card issuer (transaction limit, restricted lists, etc.).

7) Ticket misuse
The misuse of a ticket (day ticket, season ticket, etc.) will result in confiscation of the ticket or road use ban.

8) Long-term tickets
Season tickets and 3-week-cards can be purchased only for vehicles, that are not used as taxis, rental cars, car sharing vehicles, or registered for the commercial transport of passengers (according to the vehicle’s registration certificate).
Season tickets can be transferred a maximum of two times within the validity period. In case of the purchase of a new vehicle or the issuing of a new vehicle licence number the first transfer of the season ticket is free of charge. For this, the submission of the registration documents is necessary and the registration of the new
vehicle must not date back more than 3 months.
For transfers that do not belong to a purchase of a new vehicle or for a second transfer within the validity period an administration fee of 10 Euro will be charged (incl. VAT.).

9) Winter operations / Ski guests
A guest card of the municipalities of Krimml and Wald (public local tax) or booking confirmation must be presented to obtain free admission to the Gerlos Alpine Road.
Driving on the Gerlos Alpine Road for various winter sports during the time of the lift operation is free of charge with a valid ski pass for the ski resorts Königsleiten and Hochkrimml. The presentation of the above-mentioned guest card, booking confirmation or ski pass, or other discounts, must be made immediately in the course of the payment process at the ticket window. A refund at a later time is not possible.

10) Lump-sum payments
For journeys made by main residents of the towns of Krimml and Wald, the respective communities pay the fees. Evidence of the existence of this defined group of people must be provided directly at the cash desk by proving the requirements with a current registration confirmation (main place of residence) - not older than two years - and the registration certificate of the vehicle (district of Zell am See).

11) Ticket loss
In case of loss or damage to a ticket, a new ticket can be issued. An administration fee of 10 Euro will be charged (incl. VAT.).

12) Ban on camping
The Nature Conservation Act and the Nature Conservation Ordinance allow camping only at officially approved campsites. Camping is forbidden along the road.

13) Liability
Holders of a valid ticket expressly acknowledge that road support (road condition and safety check) is performed only during the hours in which the toll station is open and accepting payment. For damages outside this period (during the night after closing) the Grossglockner High Alpine Road AG accepts no liability.

14) Personal responsibility
A road in the high mountains that overcomes large differences in elevation can lead to extremely hazardous situations in certain weather conditions (fog, snow, storm, black ice, etc.). In the high mountains, weather and road conditions can also change very rapidly and therefore it is not always possible for the information provided by the toll station to be accurately predictive or fully comprehensive. Instead, it is up to the assessment of the vehicle operator himself to decide when and whether the conditions permit continued driving or if stopping or turning back is required.

15) Conduct in the alpine pasture areas
The Gerlos Alpine Road is located in an alpine pasture area; sometimes the road goes directly across pastureland. Drivers and cyclists must proceed with particular caution and with a correspondingly reduced speed. Free-range grazing livestock (e.g. sheep) or even wild animals (e.g. especially in blind curves) must be expected at any time! When undertaking hikes across pastureland, the relevant recommendations on the website and the signage on site must be strictly adhered to.

16) Data storage
All tickets issued by Gerlos Alpine Road are linked to the respective licence numbers; therefore they will be saved for a period of 12 month after the end of validity.
In addition, license plate images are taken by camera per lane. These photos are stored for 3 months to process complaints about invoices.
For security reasons, the area in front of and after the toll station is video mentioned. The resulting footage is deleted after 72 hours. In the event of legal violations, the data will be stored until (judicial) clarification has been effected through legal channels.
Further information can be found in our privacy policy.

17) Jurisdiction and Applicable Law
For all civil disputes in connection with the paid use of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, the court with jurisdiction over the subject matter at the place of the registered office of GROHAG in the city of Salzburg is responsible. Only Austrian law applies, excluding choice of laws rules of private international law.
