The power of water

The Krimml Waterfalls – Europe's biggest waterfalls

The Krimml Waterfalls – Europe's biggest waterfalls – with an impressive height of 380 meters over three steps are the fifth-highest waterfalls in the world. The Krimml River is the source of the Krimml Waterfalls with a catchment area of 110 square kilometers and 23 glaciers.

The water from the Krimml River descends in three cascades. Depending on the season, the river carries between 10 and 83 cubic meters of water per second. The volume of water carried on an average day during the glacier melting period between May and August fluctuates between 20 and 35 cubic meters per second. The most water plunges into the valley in the evening, when the noon snowmelt virtually produces a flood. The waterfall is exposed to the sun at noon, causing an ebb tide to prevail. In the early morning the glaciers deliver the least water because of the cold nights.

Establishing the Hohe Tauern National Park

By establishing the Hohe Tauern National Park in 1984, both the Krimml Achen Valley and the Krimml Waterfalls became a protected area. The forces of nature can best be seen from the "Wasserfallblick" parking lot 6 along the Gerlos Alpine Road or directly from the Waterfall Trail.
