History of the Krimml Waterfalls
Krimml Waterfalls – the highest waterfalls in Europe
Europe's highest waterfalls have won a number of prizes over the centuries. In 1796 the Krimml Waterfalls were called the "biggest and most magnificent natural spectacle in the State of Salzburg." In 1845 an earlier version of the Baedek Travel Guide even boasted that the "the monarchy's most beautiful waterfalls are located behind Krimml."
In those times access to the 380 meter Krimml Waterfalls by tourists was unthinkable. It was not until 1876 that the young Alpine Association planned a footpath with bridges and observation platforms along the three cascades. The new footpath was finally opened In 1879. The rush to see the waterfalls did not occur until the Pinzgau Railroad line was completed in 1898. In 1967 the Krimml Waterfalls won the European Nature Conservation Award.
