History of the Gerlos Alpine Road
The entire length of the two-lane connecting road was built between the communities of Krimml and the so-called "Pinzgauer Höhe", just before the Durchlaßboden Reservoir, between 1960 and 1962. The plans were made already in 1949 by Franz Wallack, the brilliant constructor of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. But the Gerlos Alpine Road has only been open to traffic in its entirety since 1964, when the Province of Tyrol and die Tauern Power Stations connected the road between the Pingauer Höhe and the community of Gerlos during the construction of the gigantic reservoir.
The road connection from Salzburg to Tyrol, however, has an even longer history.
